Pool Duty

You look after your pool. You want to know it's right.

Testing is the easy part. Knowing what the numbers mean, how much to add, and whether the pump really needs all those hours is where it gets tricky.

  • Is it the pH, or the chlorine?
  • How much do I actually add?
  • What is that pump costing me?

That's where TED comes in. It answers all three for your pool: which reading is off, exactly how much to add, and what your pump is costing you. Then it keeps adjusting as the weather changes, suggesting the cheapest hours to run your pump.

Curious what your pump costs to run?

Your fridge needs power all day. Your pool pump doesn't. TED can suggest moving it out of peak times from day one, and trimming the hours once your water's in good shape.

Slide to the hours your pump runs now for a rough idea of the cost.

$1,221a year to run the pump

Based on a typical 1.1 kW pump at 38c per kWh, the same basis Together Energy uses for its savings figures. Your pump, tariff and solar will change the number.

Meet TED

Every pool is different. TED learns yours.

Most pool advice is written for an average pool. TED is a smart plug and app that builds a picture of yours, so every answer fits the pool in your backyard.

TED speaks Pool.

New to pools? TED tells you what each test result means, and exactly how much to add for your pool. You'll pick up how it all works as you go.

“A little bit of knowledge goes a long way. We didn't realise the pH and salt levels were so important.”
David, Mosman NSW

From 12 hours a day to 5, one step at a time.

David and Sara's pump ran 12 hours a day, all year round, until they started with TED in November. Once their pH and salt were back in range, TED suggested trimming the schedule in small steps, checking the water after each one. By April it was down to 5 hours, and the water stayed clear. As the weather changes, TED keeps adjusting, up or down.

In the zone, all year round

TED earns its keep through the year.

Your pool doesn't need the same thing in July as it does in January. Weather, water and the way you use it all change. A timer set once runs the same hours regardless.

Rain falling on a backyard pool

Weather aware

Your pump doesn’t know it’s raining. TED does.

TED follows the forecast at your pool all year round. Rain, heat, strong sun and the change of seasons all shift what your water needs, so TED can prompt a fresh test, suggest a little more pump time, or suggest winding back when things cool off.

A fresh test is worth it after

  • Heavy rain
  • Extreme heat
  • A recent treatment
  • A pump change

Tariff aware

TED knows when your power costs less.

TED works from the peak and off‑peak times in your energy plan, and suggests hours that cost less.

Got solar? It can line your pump up with your panels, and steer clear of peak on grey days.

More when your pool needs it. Less when it doesn’t.

Weather prompts and tariff and solar recommendations are part of TED AI, included for your first year.

Savings you'll want to check.

Ask anyone with rooftop solar. Once you can see what you're saving, you keep checking. TED gives you that for your pool pump, with power use by the day, week, month and year, and what TED is saving you. It's the kind of number you bring up at the next barbecue.

“Seeing energy consumption and savings on an app's really great.”

How it works

Up and running in three steps.

About 10 minutes from box to pool. Then TED works alongside you.

  1. The TED smart plug and test strips on the TED box by a pool

    Plug TED in

Connect TED to your home wifi. Then your pump, or your chlorinator, plugs into TED.

  2. The TED app pool profile screen: pool type, volume, treatment and pump type

    Tell TED about your pool

Pool size, pump, salt or chlorine, and your energy plan. A power bill or your postcode is enough.

  3. A TED app notification by the pool: time for a pool water test

    Log a test

Dip a strip, wait 15 seconds and tap the matching colours in the app. Every test you log shows TED what to add and when your pump can run less. TED reminds you when the next one’s due.

Before you buy

Good questions.

Something else on your mind?

Ask the TED team
Will TED work with my pump?

Almost certainly. TED works with any pool pump that plugs into a standard power point, up to 15 amps. That's around 99% of pumps, including pumps run through a chlorinator.

If you have a chlorinator, it plugs into TED and its own timer is set to always on. If you don't, your pump plugs straight into TED.

Do I need wifi at the pool?

Yes. TED uses your home 2.4 GHz wifi. You pair it near the router first, then move it out to the pool equipment. If the signal is weak out there, a range extender or mesh point usually sorts it.

If the wifi ever drops out, TED keeps running its last schedule and reconnects when it can.

My pool equipment is outside. Is that OK?

TED is made for indoor use, so outdoor equipment needs a weatherproof plug enclosure. You'll find them at Bunnings.

Does TED change my pump schedule by itself?

Not without your say so. TED runs the schedule you set. When the weather or your power prices call for it, TED AI suggests a change to your runtime or timing, and you approve it in the app.

Will TED ever tell me to run the pump longer?

Yes. Clear water matters more than a smaller bill. If a hot spell or heavy rain means your pool needs more filtering, TED suggests extra runtime. When conditions settle, it suggests winding it back. You approve each change.

Is there a subscription?

Your first year of TED AI is included in the $149, along with the smart plug, test strips and the TED app. After that it's $80 a year, including test strip refills. If you don't renew, your smart plug and app still work out your chemistry and control your pump, but you'll miss out on the weather prompts and tariff recommendations.

What if it's not right for my pool?

You have 14 days to send it back for a refund, and the hardware has a two‑year warranty.
