Getting TED online and keeping it connected.

5 questions

How do I connect TED to my wifi?

TED pairs using its own hotspot, which is simple and reliable. Here’s how it goes.

  1. Start near your router. Plug TED into a power point close to the router for the best signal while pairing.
  2. Turn off mobile data on your phone. Use Settings or Control Centre, not Aeroplane Mode, which turns wifi off too. When your phone sees TED’s hotspot has no internet, it can switch back to mobile data and drop the connection.
  3. Open the TED app and tap Click to Connect TED. Enter your home 2.4 GHz wifi name and password, then tap Next.
  4. Put TED in pairing mode. Hold the button on top of TED for 5 seconds. A slow, breathing flash means it’s ready. If it flashes fast, about twice a second, hold for another 5 seconds until it slows.
  5. Join TED’s hotspot. The app will ask you to connect to a network called SL‑#### or SmartLife followed by a number. Go to your phone’s wifi settings and select it. On iPhone, the app can only take you to the last Settings screen you opened, so go to Settings, then Wi‑Fi to find it. Your phone may warn there’s no internet. That’s expected. Go back to the TED app.
  6. Wait for TED Connected. TED uses your wifi details to join your home network. It can take up to two minutes.

Using a VPN on your phone? Turn it off while pairing, then back on afterwards.

Do I need an electrician?

No. TED plugs in. Setup takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Is TED hard to set up?

Not at all. Most people are up and running in under 10 minutes.

You pair TED near your router first. TED has no screen or keyboard, so your phone passes on your wifi name and password through TED’s temporary hotspot. Once it says TED Connected, move TED to the power point by your pool equipment and plug in your chlorinator or pump.

Stuck? A photo of your setup and a quick email to info@togethernrg.com usually sorts it fast.

Step by step setup guide

My router has 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz wifi. Which one?

TED only uses 2.4 GHz. It reaches further, which suits a device out by the pool that doesn’t need top speed.

Many routers broadcast both. Some use one name for both bands, and your phone picks the best. Others use separate names, like HomeNet and HomeNet_5G. If yours has one name, enter that. If it has two, enter the 2.4 GHz one, usually the one without 5G on the end.

Now and then a router isn’t broadcasting 2.4 GHz at all. You’ll need to turn it on in the router settings. Using the same name and password for both bands is simplest.

TED shows as offline after connecting. What can I do?

Work through these in order.

  1. Weak wifi at the pump. The most common cause. TED connects fine by the router but the signal doesn’t reach the pool. Move the router closer or add a 2.4 GHz range extender about halfway between the router and the pump.
  2. Signal on the edge. If TED keeps connecting and dropping out, a range extender will fix it. Either way, TED keeps running your pool on its last saved schedule. Changes may just take a while to reach it.
  3. Something in the way. Walls, water features and metal enclosures can all weaken the signal. Move TED or the router if you can.
  4. New router or wifi password. TED won’t reconnect by itself. Pair it again from the app with the new details.

None of these? Email info@togethernrg.com with a photo of your setup and we’ll sort it out.

Water chemistry

Water chemistry

Testing, the Water Quality Index and how TED helps.

4 questions

What is the Water Quality Index?

The Water Quality Index is a single score in the TED app built from your latest test results. It shows at a glance how close your water is to balanced, where 100% is spot on.

How often do I need to test?

TED tells you when. A stable pool can go several weeks between tests. A pool that’s recovering from a problem gets tested more often.

What test strips does TED use?

The TED test screen works with a range of common test strips.

The TED bundle comes with TED 6‑in‑1 strips, which measure total chlorine, free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness and stabiliser (CYA). Refills are available from Together Energy.

How does TED help improve water quality?

Most pool problems, like cloudy water or algae, come from the water chemistry, not too few pump hours. TED keeps you on top of the basics: it reminds you to test, you log the result, and it tells you what to add, in what order and how much.

Your Water Quality Index is built from your results, including pH, chlorine, stabiliser and salt, and shows what needs attention first. The point is to avoid over‑correcting or missing something, not to sell you more chemicals.

TED also keeps a history of your results, so you can spot patterns and work out problems faster. With TED AI, TED learns your pool over time, so its suggestions get more tailored.

Pump runtime and water chemistry go hand in hand, and TED helps you balance both.

The TED app showing today’s pump schedule and how much you’re saving a year

General

About TED

What TED does, what it saves and what it works with.

14 questions

What is TED and how does it work?

TED is a smart plug and app for your pool. Your pump plugs into TED (or your chlorinator does, if the pump runs through it), TED connects to your home wifi, and you run the pool from your phone.

TED is built around the three things pool owners tell us are hardest: getting the water chemistry right, the running costs, and a timer that’s a pain to change. TED replaces the old timer, so the schedule lives in the app.

The app walks you through balancing your water in the right order, which is what lets your pump and chlorinator run less. It shows how much energy the pool uses and how much you’re saving, and lets you switch the pump on or off from anywhere.

With TED AI, TED learns your pool. It uses your test results, the weather, your electricity tariff and your pool profile to suggest when to adjust the pump schedule. You approve each change in the app.

See how TED works

How much can I save with TED?

Most pool owners save $225 to $450 a year. It depends on your pump size, how long it runs now and your electricity tariff. Pools that were running 12 hours a day on peak rates can save more.

Most pump schedules come from generic advice or an old timer that never changes, so pools end up over‑filtered, especially outside summer. TED helps you bring runtime down safely by showing how your water chemistry, swimmers, leaves and temperature interact. Runtime only comes down while the water stays balanced.

TED never changes the schedule on its own. It suggests, and you approve. The app tracks the energy you use and what you’re saving against your old schedule.

If your chemistry was hit and miss before, getting it right also means fewer green days and less money spent on chemicals.

Estimate your savings

How does TED decide how long to run the pump?

Timing can shift out of peak hours from day one. Runtime is trimmed once your water is in balance: TED suggests cutting it back in small steps and checks the water stays stable after each one.

Once your pool finds its lowest stable runtime, TED keeps suggesting adjustments up or down as the weather and seasons change. The runtime comes from how your pool actually responds, not a generic formula. It’s a feedback loop that learns your pool.

Is TED suitable for my pool pump and chlorinator?

Yes. TED works with almost all Australian home pools.

If your pump’s schedule is set by your chlorinator, which is common with salt and mineral pools, plug the chlorinator into TED and set it to always on by deleting its own schedules. TED then runs the pump and chlorinator together.

If your pump plugs into a separate timer, plug the pump straight into TED and remove the old timer or set it to always on. TED becomes the timer, and tracks energy use as well.

TED works with single speed, twin speed and variable speed pumps that plug into a standard power point. If your pump is hard wired, TED isn’t suitable without electrical work.

Do I need solar or a special electricity tariff?

No. TED saves money on a flat rate plan with no solar too.

Most Australian pool pumps run longer than they need to. Common rules of thumb are set for the worst case: an oversized pool, lots of swimmers or leaves, or chemistry that’s off. Most pools don’t need 12 hours a day in summer or 6 to 8 in winter. TED helps you bring that down safely, and plenty of owners end up seeing how low they can go.

If you have solar or a time of use tariff, there’s more to gain. TED AI can suggest running the pump when your power is cheapest or when your panels are producing the most.

What if I want to run the pump myself?

Easy. Switch the pump on or off in the app from anywhere, or use the Timer for a one‑off run. Vacuuming, backwashing, or three dogs and five kids in the pool all afternoon: a few extra hours is one tap away.

You can also press the button on top of TED to switch it on or off, which is handy when you’re at the equipment without your phone.

A manual run doesn’t change your schedule. TED picks it up again at the next scheduled time.

Does TED change the schedule through the year?

Yes. UV, water temperature, rain and swimmers all change how much filtration a pool needs. A schedule that keeps the water clear in winter is too short for summer, and a summer schedule wastes power in winter.

TED uses the forecast for your area and your strip test results to suggest adjustments, so the pool runs no longer than current conditions need.

Does TED work with salt, mineral and chlorine pools?

Yes. TED works with chlorine, salt and mineral pools, including pools with add‑ons like ionisers or ozone.

Does TED work if my pool has a heat pump or gas heater?

It depends. In most Australian pools, the heater is plumbed in line, so its water flow comes from your normal filtration. The heater usually has a flow sensor and only runs while the pump is running.

If your heater is well sized and only needs to top up a couple of degrees a day, the runtime TED suggests should give it enough time. If it’s undersized, say a 28 °C pool in a Melbourne winter, it may need the pump running far longer, and a shorter schedule could clash with that.

So before you approve a shorter schedule, decide whether you’re happy with the water temperature, and check it again when you next test.

Does TED work with solar pool heating?

Yes. Solar pool heating usually has its own pump that switches on from a thermostat when the roof is warm enough and the pool is below its set point. It runs separately from your filtration pump, so TED can keep trimming the filtration schedule while the solar heating does its own thing.

Does TED work with variable speed pumps?

Yes, as long as the pump keeps its speed setting when the power switches off and on. TED runs a pump by switching its power.

What does a pool on TED look like?

Clear, stable water. Free chlorine sits steadily between 1 and 3 ppm. The pump runs no longer than the water needs, and no less than is safe for the conditions.

Where can I buy TED?
